Enlarged Plan Details: Toilet Rooms, Stairwells, Elevator Lobbies, and Specialty Areas
How architects develop enlarged plan details for core building areas including toilet rooms, stairwells, elevator lobbies, and specialty spaces, with emphasis on ADA clearance requirements, fixture coordination, accessibility documentation, and constructability of these high-complexity zones.
Why Enlarged Plans Exist and What They Must Show
Floor plans at 1/8" = 1'-0" cannot show everything a contractor needs to build a toilet room correctly. Grab bar heights, water closet centerline dimensions, turning radii, fixture clearances, door swing arcs. These details vanish at small scale. That's why enlarged plans exist.
Enlarged plan details (typically drawn at 1/4" = 1'-0" or larger) zoom into the building's most dimensionally constrained areas: toilet rooms, stairwells, elevator lobbies, and specialty spaces like janitor closets, electrical rooms, or lactation rooms. These are the places where code compliance lives or dies at the inch level.
Toilet rooms alone involve ADA water closet clearances (60 inches from the side wall, 56 inches from the rear wall), grab bar positioning (33 to 36 inches above finish floor to centerline), door maneuvering clearances, lavatory knee clearance, and fixture mounting heights. Miss one dimension, and the room fails inspection.
Stairwells require tread/riser relationships, handrail extensions, landing dimensions, and smoke barrier integration. Elevator lobbies need car door widths, hall call button heights, lobby dimensions, and fire-rated separation details. Every one of these areas demands its own enlarged drawing because the tolerance for error is measured in fractions of an inch.
On the PDD exam, you'll evaluate which details to include, how to coordinate enlarged plans with partition types and finish schedules, and how accessibility requirements drive documentation decisions. This is where documentation skill meets code fluency.
