Scope definition sits at the center of every successful owner-architect relationship. Get it right, and you have a clear roadmap: what you're doing, what you're getting paid for, and where your responsibilities end. Get it wrong, and you're working nights on tasks you never priced.
Under AIA B101, the architect's services fall into three categories: basic services (the five standard phases from schematic design through construction), supplemental services (identified upfront as part of the agreement), and additional services (those that emerge as the project moves forward). Article 4 of B101 specifically addresses supplemental and additional services, setting out triggers that entitle the architect to added compensation.
Scope creep is the quiet expansion of your responsibilities without a corresponding increase in fee. It happens when clients ask for "just one more thing," when code changes force redesign, or when nobody documented what was actually included in the original agreement. It drains profitability and creates legal exposure.
